P0420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

What P0420 means

P0420 compares upstream and downstream oxygen sensor activity. If the rear sensor starts mimicking the front sensor, the catalyst is no longer storing oxygen properly.

Why the check engine light comes on

The check engine light comes on because catalyst efficiency is an emissions monitor. The car may still drive normally, which is why many owners ignore it until an inspection fails.
